Food chain, ecology, the meaning of life Flashcards

Q

Why is a food chain also known as a energy chain? Do you think a food chain can contain more than six organisms? Why or why not?

A

The energy in the form of food is transferred from one organism to another along a food chain.
Organisms need the energy to carry out life processes. Hence only a small portion of energy is transferred to the next organism along the food chain. The higher the order of consumer, the lower the amount of energy it would receive.

Q

In a food chain there are 3 organisms, Grass, rabbits and Wolves.
Explain how each population(including grass) is affected if the population of grass increases.

Imagine if there was a mouse population introduced that feeds on grass and wolves feed on it.
(a) How would that affect the rabbits, assuming the amount of rabbits eaten by the wolves stays the same.
(b)How would the population of rabbits be affected if all the mouse were caught. Why.

A

As the population of grass increases, the rabbits will feed on more grass, hence its rate of reproduction increases. The population of grass starts to decrease due to overfeeding. The population of wolves increases as they feed on more rabbits and reproduce more quickly.

(a)The population of rabbits will decrease as the mice competes with the rabbits for food. with less food available, some water snails will die from lack of food.
(b)The population of rabbit decrease. Wolves feed on rabbit and mouse. If all mice are caught, the halibut will have no mouse to feed on and will feed on more squid.

Q

How does energy from the (organism X) get to the (organism Y).

A

The energy in the form of food is transferred from the (list the food chain from organism X to Y), when the x is eaten by the y which is then eaten by…

If it is (Y) get its energy from the sun, answer start with
The (producer) traps light energy from the sun to photosynthesize. The energy in….

Q

Which animals will immediately be affect if all the (x) are killed. Why?

The blue whale has an arrow pointing to eat from the krill. The killer whale does has arrows from seal halibut and squid. There is only one producer in this food chain. Which has a higher chance of survival.

A

(List all the animals that the arrow in the food chain is pointing to from (x)). The (x) are their only food source

The killer whale feeds on seal,…. while the blue whale only feeds on krill. The killer whale does not depend directly on krill for food but the blue whale depends directly on krill

Q

Soil samples of loam, clay, or sand had water poured though them, what water that was left was collected and measured. The sand had the least amount of water collected followed by the loam, clay.
(a)Which soil has the largest particles. Explain.
(b)Plant R requires slightly more water than a cactus but less than most plants. What mixture of the soils is suitable for it.

A

(a) Sand. Sand allows the most volume of water to pass through it, indicating that it has the most air spaces in it for air spaces most quickly.
(b) Sand and Loam. It has a higher percentage of sand which will allow most water to flow through. It also has some percentage of clay in it to retain some water for Plant R to absorb.

Q

Animal C and E feeds on Animal B which eats plant A. Animal E Also etas animal D, a small fish.
(a) Suggest two benefits that Plant A could provide for animal D.
(b)A large a number of animal C were caught by fishermen. The number of animal E remained the same. How would the population of plant A and animal D change. Explain

A

(a) A provides shelter for D to hide from E, protecting it from being eaten by E. A photosynthesizes and produces oxygen which dissolved in the water for D to take in to respire.
(b)The population of plant A will decrease. Fewer C will eat fewer B, resulting more B surviving and eat more A. The population of D will increase. Since there are more B, E will eat more B and hence eat fewer D.
