Food Botany 1 Flashcards
Principales of Botany
What is Food?
any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body
What is a Plant?
a living organism belonging to
the kingdom Plantae
Plant Cell
Plant cells are eukaryotic cells
Cell Wall
consistsoflong-chainpolysaccharides (cellulose)
aggregated into bundles to form fibres
great tensile strength (thicker, stronger and
more rigid than animal cells)
What is the cell wall responsible for?
responsible for: – nutrition – osmotic regulation – growth – intercellular communication
Chloroplasts
usually lens-shaped, surrounded by double membrane
Chloroplasts contains Chlorophyl?
Yes which is responsible for photosynthesis and/or pigments of
other colours (red, blue, yellow/brown)
Light can influence the movement of chloroplasts?
depending on light conditions, they can move within the cells e.g. to surface to catch more light in low light conditions
Vacuole
Biggest vesicle inside the cell - up to 90% of the volume and it also contains solutes dissolve in water.
Some functions of Vacuole:
For storage of carbohydrates, organic acids, secondary metabolites.
osmotic regulation
Recycling molecular components from organelles
Functions of the Roots (4)
The cool stem #1 (3)

The cool stem #2 (2)
Make like a tree and leave! (4)
photosynthesize
(=process that requires water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight to enable plant to produce food)
- protect buds
- store food (bulbs!)
- May capture insects
3 types of leave position
- Alternate
- Opposite
- Whorled
The Flower
Female Flower - Carpel / Pistil
Male Flower - Stamen
Perfect Flowers are those with…
:( Imperfect Flowers are those with… (2)
2 types of Flowers : Monoecious and Dioecious
if one plant has both staminate and pistillate flowers on it, it is said to be MONOECIOUS
If one plant has only staminate or only pistillate flowers on it, it is labeled DIOECIOUS

Dioecious
If one plant has only staminate or only pistillate flowers on it, it is labeled DIOECIOUS
Monoecious
if one plant has both staminate and pistillate flowers on it, it is said to be MONOECIOUS
3 Categories of Flowers
Dry Indehiscent
Nut
Dry dehiscent
Legume
Fleshy Fruits
Berry - Multiseed
Drupe - Single seed
