Farms, or perhaps people’s gardens
Where on the farms do we get food?
- Fields of cops
- Orchards ( fruit)
- Livestock ( cattle, sheep, fish, poultry)
What are subsistence farmers?
Farmers that grow food for themselves and their families to eat
What are commercial farmers?
Farmers who grow large amounts of agricultural product to sell for profit.
What does the word agriculture mean?
Farming of animals or plants to produce food, fibre and fuel.
What are different ways of getting food?
Growing it, buying it and hunting it
What are different ways of eating food?
Raw, cooked and processed
Can you tell from the size of a farm and their produce whether it is a commercial or subsistence farm?
Yes, a subsistence farm is small with mixed produce, whilst a commercial farm is big with usually only one product.
How are labour and equipment different on a commercial farm compared to a subsistence farm?
Commercial farms have workers and machinery, whilst subsistence farms are tended by the family that own them. Usually the family only have hand tools.
What happens to the products farmed on subsistence farms?
They are used to feed the family.
What is left over will be sold.
What happens to the products farmed on commercial farms?
They are sold and exported for profit.
Do subsistence farms have the means to transport their produce to towns?
Generally no. This is the opposite for commercial farms.
What is the difference between where people living in the countryside and towns get their food?
People in cities usually. It their food.
People in the countryside often grow their own food.
