What do carbohydrates and lipids have in common?
They both provide your body with energy.
If your body runs out of carbohydrates it uses lipids.
What does proteins do in your body?
Proteins are vital for growth and to repair damaged areas.
What does fibre do in your body?
Fibre helps food move through your digestive system.
Why is water important in your body?
75% of your body is water and all chemical reactions(digestion) take place in water.
What foods are minerals found in?
Meat(Iron), milk(calcium) and salt(sodium).
What are minerals needed for?
Blood(Iron), teeth/bones(Calcium) and nerves(Sodium).
What do vitamins do?
Vitamins are only needed in very small amounts, they keep vital processes happening.
Why does the body digest?
The body digests to break down the food so we can use the nutrients it contains.
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are biological catalysts - this means they speed up the rate of chemical reactions.
What is the Oesophagus?
It’s a food pipe that links the mouth to the stomach
How does the mouth help digest food?
Once you have chewed on the food and mixed it with saliva it starts to break down due to the enzyme(or amylase) that breaks down the carbohydrates.
What is emulsification?
Emulsification is when fat is broken into tiny droplets due to the bile in your liver.
What happens in the large intestine?
Water is absorbed
What five nutrients do you need to have a balanced diet?
Carbohydrates, proteins, lipids(fats and oils), vitamins, minerals.
Also fibre and water.
