Food Allergies And Intolerance Flashcards
Immune system response trigged by food eaten
Food allergy
Any molecule that elicits immune response in the body
Antigen
Elicits hypersensitivity reaction as in allergy
(From food protein or glycoprotein)
Allergen
Used when its is unclear whether the reaction is immunologically related or due to a biochemical or physiologic defect
Food sensitivity
ARF that does not involve the immune system and results from the body’s inability to digest, absorb, or metabolize a food or component of food
Food intolerance
Condition of genetic predisposition to produce IgE antibodies in response to allergen and to develop typical symptoms
Atopy
FI: scromboid poisoining, bacterial toxins, aflatoxins, yeasts
Food toxicity/microbial contamination
FI: histamine, tyramine, caffeine, food additives, tartrazine, benzoates, sulfites, MSG
Pharmacological agents/additives
FI: enzyme deficiency, lactose intolerance, fructose intolerance, GI disease, gallbladder disease, IBD, FODMAPs intolerance
Gastrointestinal disorders
FI: eating disorder, expectations
Psychogenic/behavior
Phenylketonuria, MSUD
Genetic metabolic disorders
FA: anaphylaxis, asthma, FDEIA, latex fruit syndrome, OAS
IgE mediated
CMPA, EOE, EGE, atopic dermatitis
Mixed IgE and non IgE
FA: celiac disease, heiner syndrom, dermatities herpetiformis, FPIES, FPIP, FPIE
Non IgE mediated
Environmental exposures that may alter the genetic expression of food allergy and atopy
Epigenetic
