Food Additive Definition
A substance that is added to a food either intentionally or during production, processing, treatment, packaging, transportation, or storage of food
Direct Additives
A substance that is intentionally added to a food for a specific purpose
Secondary Direct Additives
Are not directly added to food and are used in a way that are likely to become a component of the food
Indirect Additives
becomes a part of food in trace amounts during processing, treatment, packaging, transportation, and storage of foods
Interim additives
Substances with a history of used and their safety or functionality are brought into question
3 ways a substance can be approved for use as a food additive
- Acheive GRAS Status
- Prior-sanction
- Approval of a food additive petition as per Sec 408b
Color Additives
Any dye, pigment, or substance which has been made by a process of synthesis, extracted, isolated, or derived from a natural source.
They can impart color when added to food
lakes
water-insoluble forms of certifiable colors that are more stable than straight dyes
straight dye
certifiable colors that dissolve in water and are manufactured as powders, granules, liquids, or other special forms
permanent listing
a list of allowable colors determined by tests to be safe for human consumption
provisional listing
a list of colors originally numbering about 200, that FDA allows to continue to be used pending
