Food Flashcards
What constitutes as food and why do we need it? What about water
Food is nourishment for the body. It provides energy and organic materials for growth and repair of tissues. Its components include carbs, proteins and fats. Vitamins and minerals are also required in small quantities.
Water holds an important position in metabolic processes and prevents dehydration.
What’s the need for a process like digestion which has elaborate mechanical and biochemical methods?
Biomacromolecules cannot be absorbed as such in our bodies, they have to be broken down into absorbable forms so they can be utilized.
Hence a process which converts complex food substances into simple absorbable forms is required.
Define terms nutrients and nutrition.
Nutrients are organic and inorganic substances which are essential for growth and life processes.
The process of obtaining nutrients is termed as nutrition.
Nutritional materials include carbs, proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins, roughage and water.
Energy and nutrients. Discuss the energy requirements of our body as well. Also, balanced diet. Study of nutrition?
Breakdown of organic nutrients (macronutrients) releases energy.
Of our energy requirements, 50% is obtained from carbs, 35% from fats, 15% from proteins.
Carbs: 400-500g
Fats: 60-70g
Proteins: 65-75g
Balanced diet: when all nutritional materials are present in sufficient amount and proper proportion.
Trophology
Nutrients classification (on the basis of requirements)
Macronutrients: ~req in large amounts and provide energy to the body
~form bulk of the food
~all organic (carbs, fats, proteins)
~PROXIMATE PRINCIPLE OF FOOD
Micro nutrients: ~req in less amounts ~don't provide energy ~some organic (vitamins), some inorganic (minerals and water) ~protect body from deficiency disorders PROTECTIVE PRINCIPLE OF FOOD
