Tertiary/antral follicle
What is the corpus albicans and how does it form?
Regressed form of the corpus luteum
(a.k.a. atretic corpus luteum)
As the corpus luteum is being broken down by macrophages, fibroblasts lay down type I collagen, forming the corpus albicans.
What are the two different stages of follicle growth and how long does each one take?
- Preantral phase - months
- Antral phase - days-weeks
Which hormones are the different stages of follicle growth dependent on?
- Preantral phase is continuous (not gonadotrophin dependent)
- Antral phase growth is gonadotrophin dependent
What are the phases of antral follicle growth?
- Recruitment of small antral follicles
- Selection - formation of medium follicles
- Dominance - large follicles estalish dominance
