  1. essential for the manufacture of genetic material DNA and RNA
  2. helps B12 form red blood cells
  3. essential for the development of the brain and spinal cord of the foetus, preventing neural tube defects eg. Spina bifida

Effects of deficiency in folic acid

A
  1. Tiredness and fatigue
  2. In pregnant women the foetus is at risk of NTDs
  3. Lack of folic acid can cause megaloblastic anaemia (pregnant women more susceptible)
