A
- essential for the manufacture of genetic material DNA and RNA
- helps B12 form red blood cells
- essential for the development of the brain and spinal cord of the foetus, preventing neural tube defects eg. Spina bifida
- required for protein metabolism

Properties of folic acid
A
- water soluble
- stable in an acid environment
- destroyed by exposure to light and oxygen
- unstable at cooking temperatures

Effects of deficiency in folic acid
A
- Tiredness and fatigue
- In pregnant women the foetus is at risk of NTDs
- Lack of folic acid can cause megaloblastic anaemia (pregnant women more susceptible)
