Folds Flashcards
fold superposition (overprinting)
3 generations of folds (F1, F2, F3)
F1 oldest, F3 youngest
lowest number is the earliest event
later folds overprint earlier generations
Fold style: Characteristics of a fold
1.shape of the fold in profile (e.g. parallel or similar, interlimb angle etc.)
2.presence / absence of an axial plane foliation
- type of axial plane foliation
- cylindrical or not
Different generations of folds have different styles
-> fold style is used to differentiate folds of different generations.
note: Fold orientation and vergence are not style criteria, but they can be useful in differentiating folds of different generations
Fold interference pattern – type 0
Fold interference pattern - Type 1 - “dome and basin”
Fold interference pattern – Type 2 “mushroom”
