Describe farming on these mountains
A
- Slopes of the mountains are used for farming as terraces create areas of flat fertile land
- Flat areas retain water when it is difficult to do so on the mountains
- Most crops are grown in the lower valley
- Llamas carry materials for irrigation and building into inhabitable and inaccessible areas
- Some cash crops are grown e.g. soybeans, rice and cotton

A
- Andes have a range of important minerals and the Andean countries are in the top 10 for tin, nickel, silver and gold
- 50% + of Peru’s exports are from mining
- Yanacocha gold mine = largest in the world
- Brings jobs

Describe hydroelectic power in these mountains
A
- Steep slopes and narrow valleys limit farming but benefit for hydroelectric power
- More easily dammed than wider valleys
- Snow melt in the spring –> increased water supply

- Many natural attractions in the Andes e.g. peaks, volcanoes, glaciers and lakes
- Inca Trail: South America’s best known trek lasting 45km with over 250 species of orchid
