Fold Mountains Flashcards
Where are fold mountains formed?
When plates collide at destructive margins
What happens when tectonic plates collide?
The sedimentary rocks that has built up between the tectonic plates are folded are formed upwards to form mountains
What plates collide to create fold mountains?
- Continental and oceanic
2. Two continental
What are the features of a fold mountain?
Lots of high mountains which are very rocky with steep slopes
Fold mountains are used for?
Farming, Hydro-electric power, Mining, Forestry and Tourism
Farming
Higher mountain slopes aren’t great for growing crops so they are used to graze animals. Lower slopes are used to grow crops.
Hydro-electric power
Steep-sided mountains and high lakes (to store water) make fold mountains ideal for generating hydro-electric power
Mining
Fold mountains are a major source of metal ores, so there’s a lot of mining going on. The steep slopes make access to the mines difficult, so zig zags roads have been carved out on the sides of mountains
Forestry
Fold mountains ranges are a good environment to grow some types of trees. They’re grown on the steep valley slopes and are used for things like fuel, building materials and to make things like paper and furniture
Tourism
Fold mountains have spectacular scenery which attracts tourist. In winter, people visit to do sports like skiing, snowboarding and ice climbing. In summer, walkers come to enjoy the scenery.
