FOI Task A: Human Behavior and Effective Communication Flashcards

1
Q

What is Human Behavior

A

The product of factors that cause people to act in predictable ways.

Also defined as the result of attempts to satisfy certain needs. A working knowledge of human behavior can help an instructor better understand a student.

Fear causes students to “fight” or “flee”. Fleeing is avoiding an action that is feared. To fight means to take measures to overcome the fear, or at least better deal with it more directly.

Q

Barriers to effective communication 4

A

Lack of common experience. One of the greatest barriers to communication, mainly due to the differences in the backgrounds of student and instructor. Aviation is very “technical” Example: For a new student, you may want to keep to terms the general public may understand. You say something about the empennage instead you could say the tail portion of the airplane.

Confusion between symbol, and the symbolized object. This occurs when a word is confused with what it is meant to represent. Example: Student introduces their flight instructor as their teacher. The person thinks the flight instructor is just a teacher and doesn’t fly.

Overuse of abstractions. Using words that are general rather than specific (avoid whenever possible). Example: You say “airplane”. The student thinks anything from a Piper cub to 777.

Interference (physiological, environmental, or psychological). These come from outside sources that the instructor cannot control.
Example: The student has diarrhea and is having a very hard time concentrating.

Confusion between symbol and the symbolized object example

A

This occurs when a word is confused with what it is meant to represent.

You introduce a flight instructor as a teacher. This may lead to the person you are talking to thinking they are just teaching ground school and are not also a flight instructor.
