FOI Flashcards
Learn and be able to recite all the FOI elements
Law of Readiness
States individuals learn best only when they are ready to learn. Unless they see a reason for learning, they are not likely to learn.
Law of Exercise
Explains things most often repeated are best remembered. This is the reason for practice and skill.
Law of Primacy
Shows that instructors must teach all facts correctly the first time.
Law of Effect
Is based on the emotional reaction of the learner and explains that a student learns best when the experience is pleasant and satisfying. Learning is weakened if the experience is not pleasant.
Law of Intensity
States that a student will learn more from the real thing than a substitute.
Law of Recency
States things most recently learned will be best remembered. Post-flight critiques and lesson summaries reinforce this law.
Rote Learning
The lowest level of learning and provides the ability to repeat back what has been taught, w/o the understanding or application of what has been learned.
Understanding
Basis of effective learning. Know the reason for the development of skills needed to apply what is being taught.
Application
Development of skills necessary to apply what is being taught.
Correlation
The highest level of learning. Correlation allows a student to associate an element that has been learned with other segments or “blocks” of learning or accomplishment.

Simple to Complex
Do not be afraid to omit “less important” information at
first in order to simplify the learning process. If Class D, E,
and G airspace are the only airspace types being utilized by
a student, save the discussion of A, B, and C airspace until
they have operating familiarity with the other types. Less
information at first is easier to absorb.
Lecture Advantages
Large Groups Loudspeaker can be used Used to present information that would be difficult for students to get another way Supplement other teaching Many ideas in a short period of time Good for new subjects
Evaluation
In the initial stages of skill acquisition, practical suggestions
are more valuable to the student than a grade. Early evaluation
is usually teacher oriented. It provides a check on teaching
effectiveness, can be used to predict eventual student learning
proficiency, and can help the teacher locate special problem
areas. The observations on which the evaluations are based
also can identify the student’s strengths and weaknesses, a
prerequisite for making constructive criticism
Personal Appearance and Habits
customer expects an instructor to be neat, clean, and
appropriately dressed. Personal habits have a significant effect on the professional
image. The exercise of common courtesy is perhaps the most
important of these
Integrated Flight Instruction
Integrated flight instruction is flight instruction during
which students are taught to perform flight maneuvers
both by outside visual references and by reference to flight
instruments.
Blocks of learning
Foundation blocks, then others should build on that foundation. Boost in self confidence
Purpose of lesson plans
Lesson plans are designed to assure that each student
receives the best possible instruction under the existing
conditions.
