Fog Flashcards
1
Q
How is Fog caused?
A
It is caused by cooling of air to a dew point temperature until it becomes saturated then it condenses into minute water droplets.
2
Q
By how much does Fog reduce visibility depending on levels?
A
- Fog: Reduction below 1000m
- Thick Fog: Reduction below 180m
- Dense Fog: Reduction below 50m
3
Q
How is sea/advection fog formed?
A
When warm moist air flows over a cold sea surface and cools to its due point.
4
Q
What are the different types of fog?
A
- Sea/Advection Fog
- Radiation Fog
- Evaporation Fog
- Frontal Fog
5
Q
What two variables do you need to predict if fog will form?
A
- Sea Temperature
- Dew Point
6
Q
How would you determine if fog will form or not?
A
We compare the sea temperature with the dew point we got from the differences of wet and dry bulb from NP100.
- If dew point temp is between dry bulb temp and sea temp, fog may form.
- If dew point temp is outside dry bulb temp and sea temp, fog will NOT form.
