Focus on Inflammatory Brain Disorders Flashcards
Bacterial meningitis
Acute inflammation of meningeal tissue (med emer)
-always arachnoid mater and cerebrospinal infection
…..?????????
Baccterinal Meningitis
Organisms enter from CNS…..?????
What do you see with BM?
Purulent secretions spread…..?????
clinical manifestations of BM
fever severe headache N/V Nuchal rigidity (rigid neck) Positive Kernig's sign Positive brudzinskys
Kernig’s sign
examiner will flex hip, then extend, pt will complain of pain in thigh
Brudziski’s sign
Examiner flexes neck and pt’s hips will flex in return
Complications of BM
Increased ICP (major cause of unconsciousness) Rsidual neurologic dysfunction (vision and hearing loss) Acute Cerebral edema
What does acute Cerebral edema cause
Bradycardia
seizuress
etc…..????
Diagnostic studies for BM
blood culture lumbar puncture and analysis of CSF c-rays of skull CT scan MRI
BM collaborative Care
rapid dx
abx therapy
examination of fundus of eyes before LP to identify increased ICP
BM ND
disturbed sensorry patterns
acute pain
BM Nursing Implementation
vaccination against resp inf’s
early and appropriate tx of resp inf
prophylactic abx for those exposed to meningitis
careful recording of assessment
BP pt care
comfortable positioning pain medication decreased lighting observe for seizures admin anti-seizure meds manage fever assess for dehydration initial resp isolation ** steroids w/ abx have decreased death rate and sxs such as hearing loss
Viral Meningitis
Most common are enterovirus, …….
