Who was Hindemith? What was he famous for?
He lived from 1895-1963, born in Hanau. He was one of the pricipal German composers of the 20th century and a leading theorist. Sought to revolutionize tonality, pioneered in the writing of ‘Gebrauchsmusik’ (or utility music), which are compositions for everyday occasions. He regarded the composer as a craftsman (turning out music to meet social needs) rather than as an artist (composing to satisfy his own soul)
Examples of other works by Hindemith
Mathis der Maler, the Violin Concerto (1939), the Cello Concerto (1940), Symphony in B-flat
Style of Hindemith
- Early music anti-Romantic and iconoclastic (反传统) but also showed humour, exuberance, and inventiveness
- later expressionist
- Then Neoclassical: with the contrapuntal language of Johann Sebastian Bach and Max Reger
Hindemith life experiences
Conscripted but survived through luck, most famous opera got banned by Nazi authorities, moved to Turkey then to the US then returned to Europe
Expressionist music
Defied tradition to convey powerful feelings in music, often features a high level of dissonance, extreme contrasts of dynamics, constant changing of textures, “distorted” melodies and harmonies, and angular melodies with wide leaps
Hindemith flute sonata demonstrates
The three-movement sonata demonstrates Hindemith’s unique harmonic language, Neo-Classical idioms, and the Neue Sachlichkeit style. Each movement is an exploration of motivic development using primarily three musically independent lines, and the expanded third movement concludes with a parody of a military march.
