Fluids (CH4) Flashcards
1
Q
What is the standard measurement of pressure?
A
Pascals (Newtons/M2) or Pa
2
Q
What are other measures of pressure?
A
101325 Pa = 1 atm = 760 mmHg = 760 torr
3
Q
When will an object sink?
A
When gravitational force is greater than the buoyant force ( es. if the object submerged is denser than the fluid).
4
Q
According to Bernoulli’s equation, how does an airplane lift itself?
A
- The slower air below the wings will exert more force on the wing than the faster air above, thereby lifting the plane.
- The wings are curved so that air must travel farther above the wing.
Equation: ( P1 + ½pvi2 + pghi = P2 + ½pvf2 + pghf )
5
Q
According to the venturi effect, what happens to the pressure above narrow tubes?
A
Since the linear speed increases at narrow points, the pressure exerted on the walls decreases; so the columns above the tube will be lower in height.
