Fluids and solids Flashcards
What is the equation for density?
density = mass/volume
What is the density of water?
1g/mL or 1g/cm³
What is the equation to work out pressure?
Pressure (P) = Force (F) x Unit area (A)
What is the equation for pressure change?
ΔP = Density (p) x Gravity (g) x ΔDepth(h)
What is specific gravity equivalent to?
The height of a buoyant object below the surface of the fluid.
If SG = 0.9, 90% of the height of the object is immersed in water.
What does archimedes’ principle state?
an object which is completely or partially submerged in a fluid, experiences an upward force equal to that of the fluid displaced
What is viscosity (n)?
the measure of efficiency of transfer of fluid momentum
What is fluid viscosity?
the resistance to the flow of layers of fluid past each other
it results in the dissipation of mechanical energy, as one layer flows over another, its motion is transmitted to the second layer and causes this layer to be set in motion.
this results in transfer of fluid momentum.
