Fluids And Electrolytes Flashcards
What are the major cations in the body fluids?
sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and hydrogen ions.
The major anions are:
chloride, bicarbonate, sulfate, and proteinate ions
It is the dynamic process in which the body maintains balance by constantly adjusting to internal and external stimuli.
Homeostasis
It occurs when the body reverses an original stimulus for the body to regain physiologic balance.
Negative feedback.
e.g BP control, maintenance of normal body temperature
A body feedback that enhances or intensifies the original stimulus.
Positive feedback
e.g. Blood clotting after injury, a woman in labor
What are the fluid regulation mechanisms?
The thirst center (hypothalamus)
Antidiuretic hormone
The RAA system
Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP)
It is the accumulation of fluid in interstitial tissue spaces.
Edema or third-space fluid
What are the causes of edema?
Disruption of the filtration and osmotic forces of the body’s circulating fluids
