Fluids And Dynamics Flashcards
What is matter
Matter is something with mass and volume
What is mass
Mass is the amount of matter that a substance or object contains
What is volume
Volume is the amount of space taken up by a substance or object
How does matter mass and volume relate to the 3 states of matter
A solid has a definite shape and volume
A liquid has a definite volume but it’s shape is determined by its surroundings
A gas has its volume and shape determined by its surroundings
What is thermal expansion
It’s when heat expands because of the particles move around faster and cover a larger area
What is thermal contraction
It’s when the temperature decreases and the particles slow down and move closer together
What are the 6 types of forces
Gravitational force Tension force Friction force Elastic force Electrostatic force Magnetic force
What 2 categories can the forces be split into
Action at a distance forces////// contact forces
Gravitational/ action at a distance
Electrostatic/action at a distance
Magnetic/action at a distance
Tension/contact
Friction/contact
Elastic/contact
What is and example of each type of force
Tension force-tug of war
Friction force-running hands together
Elastic-elastic band
Gravitational-dropping something in the ground
Electrostatic-balloon sticking to wall
Magnetic-magnets
Mass VS Weight
Mass is the amount of matter in an object
Weight is the amount of force on and object to gravity
How do you measure force
We measure mass using a competitive SI system using a 1kg cylinder that everything is compared to
What is compression
An increase in pressure forces the particles closer together decreasing there volume the space between the particles are being compressed
What is viscosity
The description of fluids resistance flow
High viscosity-he particles move faster
Low viscosity- the particles move slower
What is Adhesion
Adhesion Is the attraction or joining of two different objects or fluids to each other
What is cohesion
Cohesion is the strength with which the particles of an object or fluid attract to each other
