What are the NICE reccommendations/requirements for maintenance fluids?
A
- 25-30ml/kg/day of water and
- approc 1mmol/kg/day potassium. sodium and chloride and
- approximately 50-100 g/day of glucose to limit starvation ketosis
So, for a 80kg patient, for a 24 hour period, this would translate to:
- 2 litres of water (25x80)
- 80mmol potassium (1 x80)

- 9% saline:
* if large volumes are used there is an increased risk of hypercholaemic metabolic acidosis

- contains potassium and therefore should not be used in patients with hyperkalaemia
