Fluid Compartments Flashcards
What is the intracellular fluid volume in the cytosol?
28 L
What is the intravascular fluid volume?
3 L
Interstitial fluid volume?
11 L
Extracellular fluid volume ( Intravascular+ interstitial)?
14 L
What is the total body water percentage?
60% of the organisms mass.
What percentage of Total body fluid is distributed in ICF and ECF space?
40% ICF and 20% ECF
What is the osmolarity of the total body water ?
300 mOsm/ L
What is a hypertonic saline solution?!
It is a saline solution that has 3% or 5 % sodium chloride
What is the effect of IV hypertonic solution on fluid osmolarity and fluid volume between iCF and ECF ?
The hypertonic saline which contains 3 to 5 % of sodium chloride will increase the osmolarity of the ECF as a result more fluid will shift from the ICF to ECF in an effort to regain fluid equilibrium. This will result in reduction in osmolarity of ECF and increase in fluid volume of ECF.
What is the effect of hypotonic solution infusion on ECF ICF fluid volume and osmolarity?
The ECF fluid volume will increase, but the osmolarity will reduce. The excess fluid will redistribute to regain equilibrium. Which will result in fluid moving from the ECF to ICF. Consequently there will be a reduction in ICF osmolarity too
What is Gibbs -Donnan effect?
It is the distribution of predictable and unequal distribution of permeable charged ions on either sides of a semi-permeable membrane in the presence of impermeable charged ions.
