Flowering Plant Traits Flashcards
Master terms for morphological traits of flowering plants necessary for field identification
Abaxial
Dorsal; facing away from the axis (e.g. underside of leaf)
Acaulescent
Stemless or apparently stemless (main stem underground)
Accrescent
increasing in size with age, after flowering
accumbent
relating to cotyledons: having the edges adjacent to the radicle
achene
small, indehiscent, dry fruit with a thin and close-fitting wall surrounding the single seed
achlorophyllous
lacking chloropyll
acicular
needle-shaped or pointed
actinomorphic
radially symmetrical, regular, divisible into equal halves by two or more planes
adaxial
ventral, facing towards the axis, e.g. upper side of leaf
adherent
touching closely, almosy adhesively, but not fused to, a dissimilar organ
adnate
united to an unlike organ or part
adventitous roots
secondary roots appearing from any part of the plant (e.g. stem or leaf) other than the root system
aerenchyma
parenchymous tissue with particularly large intercellular spaces, common in tissues of wetland plants
aestivation
the arrangement of perianth parts in the bud
aggregate fruit
the product of several separate carpals of a single gynoecium that stick together or are connate, aka syncarp
