Floral Anatomy Flashcards
Anther
The head on the filament
Filament
The long thin part of the male reproductive system
Stigma
The head of the style
Style
The tube leading down to the ovary
Petal
Ring of brightly colored, leaf shaped parts of a flower
Ovary
Where the ovules are
Ovules
The eggs in the ovary where the sperm goes and which forms into seeds
Sepal
Outermost ring of modified leaves that protects the flower bud
Receptacle
Where the stem turns into the sepal
Stamen
Male reproductive structures; produces pollen.
Consists of an anther at the tip of the filament
Pistil
Female reproductive part; produces eggs
Consists of stigma, style and ovaries.
How do the sperm meet the ovules?
Pollen spores from a different plant land on the stigma, travels down the style through a tube it made until it hits an ovule. Ovule later forms a seed.
Flowers
The purpose is to attract insects. They produce nectar, fluid which contains sugar.
Leaves
Make food for the plant; chloroplasts capture energy from sunlight; absorb CO2 from the air; use energy to make simple sugar
Leaf structure
Outer surface covered by a cuticle
