Floor Frame Support Systems Flashcards
How should columns be installed?
Centrally located on footings and securely fastened to the supported member and the supporting footings to prevent lateral moment. Must be plumb.
What is a column?
A vertical length of wood, metal, etc. that transfers loads to supports below.
What size of steel pale would need to be on top of a steel column supporting a wood beam?
It must extend the full width of the beam and must not be less than 100 in length and 6.35 mm in thickness. Must have a minimum 100 mm
What is the benefit of a teleport over a non-adjustable column?
As a home settles after construction and the wood members shrink, the steel telepost cab be adjusted by turning the threaded shaft at the top of the pipe to accommodate the movement.
Why and how must the base of a wood column be protected when in contact with a footing?
Wood columns are susceptible to rot at the point of contact with concrete supported by soil. Wood columns must be separated from concrete in contact with the ground by polyethylene film or Type S roll roofing.
Can a built-up wood column be constructed of short pieces from the job site?
No. The layers must be full length and must not be less than 38 mm (1 1/2”) in thickness.
Can a carpenter glue some plywood together and make an engineered column.
Engineered wood product columns must be manufacture according to the specific standards and cannot be made on site by carpenters.
When must an engineer be involved in designing header joists for a floor frame?
If the header exceeds 3200 mm
The maximum hole size in a solid wood joist can NOT be more than _____ % of the joist depth.
25 %
Or 1/4
Steel pipe can be used if the outside diameter is 73 mm (2 7/8) or more and the wall thickness is not less than 4.76 mm.

A concrete ______ can be installed to raise the base of the wood post above the floor level and reduce potential water damage.
Pedestal
Wood columns must be separated from concrete in contact with the ground by ______ film or ____ _ roll roofing.
Polyethylene
Type S roll roofing
Solid wood postwar be min. 140 x 140

Built up wood beam columns layers must be ____ length and not less than ____ in thickness.
Full
38 mm
What is a glue laminated column?
Layers of solid wood that are glued, rather than nailed or bolted, together.
The glue creates a much stronger joint or bond than a fastener. Resulting in the use of smaller columns agree larger ones would typically be required.
What is parallel strand lumber columns?
Constructed of long strands of wood arranged parallel to the strength of the member, then glued and pressed together.
Why might a T-footing be used for interior load bearing wall?
To raise the base of wall away from the floor in order to prevent decay of the wood and transfer loads to the supporting soil below.
