When a river overtops or bursts its banks and flows across the floodplain

A
A body of water that rises to overflow land that is not normally submerged

Define Threshold Exceedence
A
A peak disharge that exceeds a given threshold

Define annual maximum flood
A
The highest diacharge in any one year (calendar or hydrological)

Define mean annual flood
A
An index of “central tendency” of the istribution of flood magnitudes. Often estimated by averaging the series of annual maximum floods.

An index based on te “upper tail” of the distribution of flood magnitudes.
