- There was a thunderstorm on the 16th August 2004
- 200mm rain fell in 24 hours (most of which fell in just 5 hours)
- Steep-sided valley slopes meant rain water poured into the river faster
- River burst its banks

- Flood water carried cars, tree trunks and branches
- Some people were trapped and needed to be airlifted to safety
- 58 flooded buildings, some demolished
- 25 businesses destroyed by flood water and others lost a lot of income
- 84 wrecked cars removed from harbour and 32 were lost
- £15million damage
- Roads and bridges damaged
- Trauma to the people of Boscastle lead to increased stress levels
