What is flooding?

A
  • no gradual exposure, patients exposed to stimulus at top of hierarchy instantly
    -imaginal exposure, virtual reality exposure, in vivo exposure
    -forced, prolonged exposure to stimulus that provoked the original trauma

How does flooding work?

A

-Patients anxiety is held at a high level, people can only experience anxiety response for a certain length of time before it has to subside due to exhaustion
-if the patient is prevented form making their normal avoidance response, extinction will occur

What is implosion therapy?

A
  • made by thomas stampfl
    -phobic patients were bombarded with detailed descriptions of the situations that they feared for 6-9 continuous hours lost their fear
  • zev wanderer reduced time needed for the first flooding from 9 to about 2 hours

How is relaxation used in flooding?

A
  • exhaustion sets in and anxiety subsides
  • no choice but to confront fear so panic subsides and the fear is extinguished
    -therapist offers little assistance but will help with relaxation techniques
  • progressive muscle relaxation
  • therapist discussed levels of anxiety the patients are prepared to endure during the session before it commences

A

    -patients anxiety gets to point of exhaustion
