Flooding Flashcards
What is precipitation?
Rain, hail, sleet and snow that falls from the clouds.
What is condensation?
When water vapour cools and turns into clouds.
What is evaporation?
When the sun heats up water from the sea and it goes into the air.
What is groundwater flow?
When water flows through the rocks and soil underground.
What is surface run-off?
When the water runs off the surface of the ground.
What is transpiration?
When the sun heats up water from the leaves of the trees.
What is the water cycle?
The water cycle is the process by which water moves from the sea to the air and then to the land.
What is soil moisture flow
Water flows horizontally through the soil towards the river
What is groundwater storage
Water fills in the cracks in the rock and is stored deep underground
What is interception storage
Leaves and buildings catch rain as it falls to the ground and stores the water
What is infiltration
Water moves downwards into the soil from the surface
What is soil moisture storage
Water fills the pores between soil particles.
What is percolation
Water moves deep downwards into the permeable rock
What is a flood
An overflow of water which submerges dry land
What causes a river to flood
Rivers flood when too much water reaches the river and it gets there very quickly through surface run off rather than slower movement like soil through flow or groundwater flow. Many factors increase the chances of flooding.
