Flood/river Management Flashcards
1
Q
Name the five types of flood/river management
A
Embankments Dredging Floodplain zoning Afforestation Straightening the river
2
Q
What do embankments do?
A
The river can hold more water as the banks are higher
3
Q
What is dredging
A
Dredging is digging out sediment making the river deeper and so can hold more water without flooding
4
Q
What is floodplain zoning
A
It involves planning what is built on the floodplain and what is built further away
For example: floodplain used for sports pitches or farming but hospitals and schools would be built away from the floodplain higher up.
5
Q
What is afforestation
A
Planting trees which will intercept rainfall and absorb water from the ground
6
Q

The water flows out to sea more quickly.
