Flood hydrographs Flashcards
What is a flood hydrograph?
This is the discharge of a river following a particular storm event.
What do hydrographs show?
Hydrographs show the runoff variation between storm flow and base flow.
What is the rising limb?
When the discharge in the river begins to rise after the rainfall/ storm event.
What is the peak flow?
This is the highest amount of discharge in the river after the rainfall.
What is the recession limb?
This is when water in the river begins to decrease after the storm event.
What is stormflow made up of?
Stormflow is made up of throughflow, channel precipitation, and overland flow.
What is lag time?
This is the difference between the peak of the rainfall to the peak of the discharge.
What is bank-full discharge?
This is when the river reaches full capacity and when flooding is likely to occur.
What is a river regime?
The river regime is the yearly discharge of a river, it’s an annual hydrograph.
