Q

What is laminar and helical flow?

A

Laminar - different levels of water speed (fastest in the centre just below the surface
Helical - found mainly in drainage channels with a uniform cross section. A corkscrew or spiral action of the water

16
Q

If an object in flowing water does NOT have a cushion wave in front of it, what might this suggest?

A

It could be a siphon (i.e water flow flowing underneath the object)

17
Q

What is the hierarchy of rescue when dealing with water rescue incidents?

A

Talk
Reach
Throw
Row
Go / Tow
Helo

18
Q

What is the hand signal for distress?

A

One hand raised above the head

19
Q

What is the hand signal for OK

A

One hand flat on the head (no tapping!)

20
Q

What is the hand signal for medical help (or bring medical kit)

A

Both arms crossed in front of the chest

21
Q

What is the hand signal for stop?

A

Arm outstretched in front chest showing palm.

22
Q

What would a single whistle blast mean?

A

Stop or attention to the signaller

23
Q

What would two whistle blasts mean?

A

Attention upstream

24
Q

What would three whistle blasts mean?

A

Attention down stream

25
What would three whistle blasts repeated mean?
Emergency
26
What would one long blast followed by one short blast on the whistle mean?
Carry on
27
Water tries to flow in straight lines, what is this direction of flow known as?
Current vector
28
Extreme care should be taken when operating in flood water. What are hazards to be aware of?
Sudden changes in depth Contamination Displaced inspection covers Floating debris Submerged debris Water may be static or fast flowing
29
What are the three variables that affect water?
Volume Gradient Obstacles
30
What might a standing wave signify?
That there is a fully submerged object below the surface. The standing wave is caused by the flow of water hitting the object, rising over it the interacting with the eddy behind the object. This friction causes a stationary wave. For swimmers this poses a hazard of submersion, disorientation and impact risk.
31
When receiving the throw line what part should you grab and why?
The line (not the bag) as there may be line left inside the bag which will uncoil and send you further down stream!
32
With regards to drowning, how long after submersion can death occur?
72 hours
