Flight Controls Flashcards
Tail rotor malfunctions are classified into what two categories?
Control system and drive system
What indicates a tail rotor drive system failure?
Sharp yaw to the right relative to how much power is being applied.
Excessive noise and vibration from tail section.
Touchdown should occur with no power applied to the main rotor.
What are the types of tail rotor control failure?
Fixed-pitch Prior to mixing unit (stuck pedal) After mixing unit (collective to yaw coupling) Cable failure Single cable Dual cable
Describe stuck pedals.
Binding occurs between the pedals and mixing unit. Pedals will not move or will have limited range. Full range of collective movement available. Normal collective to yaw coupling is available.
Describe fixed pitch.
Blockage is aft of the mixing unit. No tail rotor pitch control is available. Collective movement with pedal inputs and vise versa.
How do you land with fixed pitch?
Fixed pitch occurring at high power setting yaws helicopter left, reduce airspeed and add power until nose aligns with runway.
Fixed pitch at cruise requires slightly higher airspeed and lower power.
Fixed pitch at low power requires highest touchdown speed 54 kts at power setting that allows alignment.
How do you land with cable failure?
Helicopter trims normally at 40 and 135
Single cable failure
Right-normal left pedal available
Left-
How many trim and series actuators are there?
3 pairs of series actuators
4 trim actuators
What does the AHRS do?
Attitude Heading and Reference System provides attitude rate and positional signals to flight computers. Provides pitch and roll attitude signals to the flight computers.
Trim vs Series actuators
Trim Move controls Have 100% control authority Electronic clutch - trim switches Series Do not move controls Have 10% control authority
SAS and ATT
Stability Augmentation System
Provides rate dampening
Attitude Mode Provides attitude retention in pitch and roll Heading hold Yaw less than 60 kts Roll more than 60 kts
VEL HOLD
Must be slower than 60 kts
Enhanced version of ATT mode
Go around mode
75 kts
750 fpm
Climb rate has priority and will sacrifice airspeed, especially OEI
What airspeed should you fly with dual AP failure in IMC?
125 KIAS
What pitch does the tail rotor assume if both cables fail? What air speeds result in coordinated level flight?
-2 degrees
40 and 135 KIAS
