Flexibility training and lifestyle diseases Flashcards
Define the two types of flexibility?
static - the RoM around a joint when not moving
dynamic - RoM around a joint when moving
5 factors affecting flexibility?
elasticity of ligaments and tendons
amount of stretch allowed by surrounding muscles
type of joint
age
gender
What are the two methods of evaluating flexibility?
sit and reach test
goniometer - instrument which measures angles
What is static and active/passive stretching?
static - muscle is held in a stationary position for 30 secs
active - joint is pushed beyond point of resistance
passive - someone else holds muscle
What is ballistic stretching?
stretching through the use of swinging and bouncing movements to push body part even further
What is dynamic stretching?
controlled movements that gently take a body part to the limit of its RoM
What is PNF stretching?
muscle is contracted isometrically for at least 10s. It is then relaxed and stretched again which means it stretches further second time as stretch reflex is delayed
What is coronary heart disease?
blood flow to heart is reduced leading to a heart attack due to atherosclerosis
What is atherosclerosis?
a build up of fatty deposits in the arterial walls which narrows the lumen
What is asthma?
the constriction of the bronchial airways and inflammation of the mucous membranes
