Flaviviridae (Virus) Flashcards
What are the family characteristics of Flaviviridae?
Enveloped, icosahedral arbovirus.
What are the diseases of medical importance caused by Flaviviridae? (5 diseases)
- West Nile Encephalopathy Virus (SLE)
- West Nile Encephalitis Virus (WNV)
- Dengue Virus
- Yellow Fever Virus (YFV)
- Hepatitis C Virus (HCV)
What are the hosts and vectors of SLE and WNV? What disease does it cause? How to prevent?
Mosquitoes are the vector, host is birds, disease is encephalitis, vector control is how you prevent disease.
Which age group had the highest rate of mortality for WNV?
The Elderly, the rest are either asymptomatic or have west nile fever.
What are the vectors for YFV and Dengue? The host?
Vector is mosquitoes, host is monkeys and humans.
Diseases caused from Dengue fever?
- First time, it is Break bone fever, rash, muscle and joint pain.
- If endemic, you can get Dengue Hemorrhagic fever/shock, re-infection can result in hemorrhage and shock, primarily in children.
Diseases caused by YFV?
Yellow Fever, Liver, Kidney, Heart and GI (black vomit damage).
Prevention of YFV and Dengue Fever?
Vector control, however YFV has a live attenuated vaccine.
What seems to cause the Dengue Hemorrhagic fever?
Immune reaction to Dengue.
