Odysseus fought here for ten years then went to return home to Ithaca
Ismara (Cicones)
Him and his men stopped here to pilage the land and rob it of its goods. The Cicones returned killing many of the men. Then driven off course by a feirce storm.
Lotus Eaters
Ody. sent out a scouting party who ate with the lotus eaters which caused them not to care about going home. Ody. drug them back onto ship against their will
Island of Polyphemus
Poly. catches Ody. and his crew, eating two crew members a day. Ody. gives Poly. poisonous wine then stakes him in the eye which blinds Poly.
Poseidon
After Odysseus’ incident with Polyphemus, Poseidon is angered with Ody. and curses him to sail ten years. In the process he would lose all his crew and get home with the help of others.
Aeolia
Aeolus helped them for a month by giving them west wind to sail by to get home and a bag that contained all the winds except the west that should have taken them home.
Leather bag
Gift from Aeolus to Ody. that contained all the winds except the west. Sailor opened bag while Ody. was asleep thinking it contained gold. The bag brought them back where they had came while just in site of Ithaca. Aeolus refused to help afterwards.
Telepylos
Laestrygonians attacked fleet of ships with boulders killing off hundreds of Odys. men, leaving only one ship standing.
Aeaea
Witch-goddess Circe turned all of Ody.’s men into pigs. Hermes warned Ody. and gave him moly, which gave him resistance to her magic.
Circe
She was attracted to Ody.’s resistance and bargained to turn his men back for his love. They remained on the island for a year feasting and drinking.
The Underworld
With the help of Circe they went to the harbor at the edge of the world where Ody. summoned the old prophet Tiresias who told him how to appease the gods
The Sirens
Sailors plugged ears with beeswax and tied Ody. to mast. He begged them to take him off but they ignored him. Once out of earshot Ody. was fine
Scylla and Charybdis
Circe told Ody. to sail closer to Scylla b/c Charybdis would drown his ship. They successfully got past, but Scylla devoured six of his men.
Thrinacia
Ody. told his men not to eat the sacred cattle of Helios here but they did. Helios’ daughters told their father, and he destroyed the ship and all of Ody.’s men
Ogygia
Calypso made Ody. her lover for 7 years after he washed ashore. On behalf of Athena, Zeus sent Hermes to tell Calypso to let him go.
