What was the reality of the war?
- extremely bloody conflict
- initially people enlist, expecting quick and glorious war to be easily won
- both sides end up resorting to a draft to get soldiers to enlist

Why would this be deemed the first modern war? (5)
- propaganda effort to mobilise public opinion (pamphlets, songs, photography)
- conflict with weapons created by industrial revolution (guns longer range and more accurate)
- civilians will be targeted not just soldiers
- first major conflict where railroads transported troops and supplies
- use of the telegraph, observation balloons, primitive submarines
How is the number of deaths in the Civil War described?
number of deaths nearly equals total number of Americans who died in all the nations other wars
What diseases were killing soldiers?
Measles, malaria, typhus
medical knowledge lagging far behind the knowledge of weapons manufacturing
Why did Lincoln’s views on slavery change? Why was he apprehensive about this change?
- wanted to preserve the Union but realised that slavery so entrenched in South the two couldn’t co-exist
- military essential to keep border states so Lincoln is reluctant to support emancipation bc scared the border slave states will also secede
Why could more slaves escape?
More Southern white men left communities/white women/elderly and their slaves behind so easier for them to escape
What does General Benjamin Butler do?
he uses slaves who ran away to his fort stating they were fugitives to their advantage
known as contraband (enemy property rightfully seized as an act of war

What was the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation?
Lincoln said unless the South laid arms by the end of 1862 he would emancipate slaves in the Confederacy

What was the Emancipation Proclamation?
- applied only to areas under confederate control
- ## frees the slaves he doesn’t actually control, slaves in slave states that didn’t secede are not emancipated
