Alliteration
The repetition of conostant sounds within close proximity.
Blank Verse
Poetry that does not rhyme
Creative License
Exaggeration or alteration of actual events for the sake of a fictional narrative.
Diologue
Where characters speak to one another. Sometimes in place of expostion.
Dramatic Irony
Where the audience or reader is aware of something important of which the characters are unaware.
Exposition
Where the story is interupted to give an explanation of something related to the background of the story.
Figurative language
A use of language in which what is said is not literally meant. This includes metaphors, simile, hyperbole, personification and oxymoron.
Iambic pentameter
Poetry written with each line containing ten syllables, in five repetitions of a two syllable pattern.
Foreshadowing
When future events are subtley hinted towards by the story.
Imagery
Language describing an image in detail, using words to substitute vision.
Irony
When an unexpected event occurs and is in complete opposition to what was expected.
Metaphor
A saying meant to illustrate a point using seemingly unrelated language
Onomatopoeia
Where sounds are spelt out as words
Oxymoron
A contridiction in terms.
Paradox
Where a situation that should not be possible occurs because the different elements should cancel each other out
