Flashcards
What is cohesion?
The sticking together of like entities.
What do cohesive forces do?
Cohesive forces between liquid molecules create surface tension.
What is adhesion?
The intermolecular forces that holds solids and liquids together; attraction of dissimilar objects.
What is one aspect of capillary action?
The interaction between contacting surface of a liquid and a solid that distorts the liquid surface and cause the liquids to rise in a narrow tube.
What is another aspect of capillary action?
The movement of water within the spaces of porous material due to the forces of adhesion, cohesion, and surface tension.
What is an example of capillary action?
A piece of paper towel.
Why is water called the universal solvent?
Because it is capable of dissolving more substances than any other liquid.
What are the two molecular models for water?
Ball-and-stick model and space filling model.
What is a space filling model?
A realistic sense of molecular layout and proportionally accurate, showing relative dimensions.
What is the ball-and-stick model?
The number of connections (bonds) between atoms, and angles between atoms therefore arrangement in space.
