Flashcards 1
What determines the reactivity of an atom of an element?
The Electrons
What’s the relative charge of protons
+1
When atoms can lose or gain electrons, what happens?
they form charged particles called ions.
What happens as you go down the groups in the periodic table?
The reactivity gets stronger
What does the group number determine in your electronic structure?
It determines how many electrons there will be in your most outer shell.
What does the period number determine in your electronic structure?
It determines how many energy shells there will be.
What is an isotope?
It’s when you have an equal amount of protons and electrons but a different amount of neutrons.
How many main groups does the periodic table have?
Eight main groups.
What’s the maximum amount of electrons in the first energy shell in an electronic structure?
Two electrons
What’s the maximum amount of electrons in the second energy shell in an electronic structure?
Eight electrons
What’s the maximum amount of electrons in the third energy shell in an electronic structure?
Eight electrons
What is the electronic configuration of an atom?
It’s the distribution of electrons of an atom or molecule (or other physical structure) in atomic or molecular orbitals
Based on the reactivity series, what is the most reactive metal?
Potassium
Based on the reactivity series, what is the least reactive metal?
Gold
What are the two non-metals that are in the reactivity series because they can be used to extract metals?
Carbon and Hydrogen
