Who are japanese and western european fudalisms diferent or similar?
In Japan, the feudal system was less contractually based and was more so about a personal agreement between the lords and the vassals (subordinates), wherein the lords were viewed as father figure.
In Europe, the four levels of feudalism were the king, nobles, knights, peasants, and serfs. In Japan, the top of the system was the shogun, who was the military leader of Japan. The emperor of Japan, who was the official leader of the government, actually held very little political power.
A key distinguishing factor between the two systems was land ownership. European knights gained land from their lords as payment for their military service; they had direct control of the serfs who worked that land. In contrast, Japanese samurai did not own any land.
