  1. We place a small amount of the metal onto a wire mounted in a handle
  2. Place end into blue Bunsen burner flame
  3. Colour of flame can be used to detect the metal ion present

A
  • color of the ions can be difficult to distinguish especially if there is a low concentration of the metal compound
  • sample could contain a mixture of metal ions (masks the flame)
