Flame Emission Spectroscopy Flashcards

1
Q

Process of Flame Emission Spectroscopy

A
  • sample of metal ion in solution is passed through flame
  • light given out is passed into a spectroscope
  • detects different wavelengths of line to produce a line spectrum
  • position of lines in the spectrum are specific for a given metal ion

Q

Pros of flame emission spectroscopy

A
  • tells the concentration of a metal ion in a solution
  • given the lines become more intense at higher concentrations
  • sample containing multiple metal ions are all identifiable on the line spectrum

Q

Pros of this Instrumental method

A
  • very rapid
  • sensitive, works even on a small sample of metal compound
  • accurate, more likely to correctly identify the metal ion correctly

Q

How does Flame Emission Spectroscopy work?

A
  • metal ions emit light when heated
  • wavelengths of the light are specific to that metal ion
  • every metal ions produces a unique line spectrum
  • combination of wavelengths emitted depends on it’s charge and electron arrangement
