Flame Emission Spectroscopy Flashcards
1
Q
Process of Flame Emission Spectroscopy
A
- sample of metal ion in solution is passed through flame
- light given out is passed into a spectroscope
- detects different wavelengths of line to produce a line spectrum
- position of lines in the spectrum are specific for a given metal ion
2
Q
Pros of flame emission spectroscopy
A
- tells the concentration of a metal ion in a solution
- given the lines become more intense at higher concentrations
- sample containing multiple metal ions are all identifiable on the line spectrum
3
Q
Pros of this Instrumental method
A
- very rapid
- sensitive, works even on a small sample of metal compound
- accurate, more likely to correctly identify the metal ion correctly
4
Q
How does Flame Emission Spectroscopy work?
A
- metal ions emit light when heated
- wavelengths of the light are specific to that metal ion
- every metal ions produces a unique line spectrum
- combination of wavelengths emitted depends on it’s charge and electron arrangement
