Flag Football Flashcards
Intentional Grounding
llegal Intentional grounding exists when a quarterback under pressure throws the ball away to avoid a sack and the ball does not cross the line of scrimmage or is not thrown within the “vicinity” of an offensive player. “Vicinity” is the judgement of the referee as they must determine if there was a valid attempt to have a reception.
Dead ball - the ball becomes dead when…
- The ball carrier’s flag becomes detached.
- The ball carrier’s body hits the ground (you fall).
- An incomplete pass, or a fumble, occurs.
- The ball goes out of bounds.
Down
an attempt to gain yardage; each team is given 4 downs (or tries) to successfully enter the next zone.
End Zone

Flag Guarding
illegal attempt to prevent flag from being pulled.
Line of Scrimmage

4th Down
The offensive team will have the option to either go for the 1st down or punt/kick the ball to the opponent. (the returning team can not block; they must all line up on the line of scrimmage)
Downs
The offense will have 4 tries or downs to get the distance needed for a 1st down or touchdown, while the defense tries to stop them
Huddle

Buttonhook
The buttonhook route is when a receiver runs straight upfield a certain distance and then plants hard and runs straight back towards the quarterback. Often simply called a hook route. In some cases, a hook is considered a very long buttonhook, such as 10+ yards downfield. Hence the receiver must dig his cleats in hard to stop and come back at the quarterback after running so far and fast.
