Fixed Installations Flashcards
What are the different types of Automatic fire alarms detector heads? 5 to name.
Ionisation
Optical
Radiation
Heat
Sampling detector
What are the 3 different types of automatic sprinklers systems?
Wet- pipes permanently filled with water
Dry- have air under pressure to hold water back. Preventing water freezing in sprinkler pipes
Alternate- can be either wet or dry for where temperatures may vary.
What are the 3 functions of an automatic fire alarm system?
To detect a fire.
To raise alarm and indicate where fire is.
To raise alarm at central control centre.
What are the 3 functions of automatic sprinkler systems?
To detect fire
To attack fire
To give audible warning
What are drenchers and what do they do?
Drenchers protect a building from fires in neighbouring buildings by deploying water to provide a protective barrier between the fire and the building.
How to water spray projectors extinguish a fire? 3 ways.
By cooling the surface of the oil (attacking heat).
By diluting the oxygen supply (attacking oxygen).
By diluting the burning liquid by emulsification (Attacking fuel).
At what height must a building have a dry rising main?
18 metres
What are the sizes of dry rising mains and how many inlets would they have?
100mm pipes will have 2 inlets
150mm pipes will have 4 inlets
What are the 5 advantages of a dry rising main?
Reduce hose required
Reduce friction
Lessen equipment needed
Stairways are kept clear
Reduces efforts needed to make the attack
What are the heights at which a building must have a wet rising main?
In all buildings over 60 metres
In all building built since 2006 of over 50 metres
What are the 3 features a fire lift must have to be a fire lift?
Must be able to carry 8 people
Must be able to carry 850kg
Must be able to be controlled by a firefighter overriding key.
What are foam inlets in terms of fixed installations?
To channel foam into areas where there is a flammable hazard.
This reduces risk to firefighters.
What is the danger with roller shutters with a fusible link?
The danger is if the fire melts the link the roller shutter could drop unexpectedly on fire fighters, on hose lines or trap firefighters.
What pressure is a dry rising main initially charged to?
10 bar
What is the maximum pressure a fixed installation hose reel is charged to?
What is the working pressure and flow rate?
Maximum pressure- 7 bar
Working pressure- 2 bar
Flow rate of 140 litres per minute.
