Fixed Appliances Flashcards
definition of a fixed appliance
an appliance which is fixed to the teeth and cannot be removed by the patient
what are molar bands normally made of and what bonds them to teeth
normally made of stainless steel and bonded with glass ionomer cement
what material can orthodontic brackets be made of
stainless steel (main)
ceramic, CoCr, polymers
what 3 components does an orthodontic bracket consist of
bracket base
bracket slot (where archwire runs through)
tie wings (where elastomeric modules attach)
how are brackets attached to teeth
acid etch composite
what material of archwire is usually used to begin treatment and why
nickel titanium - they are flexible and can apply light continuous forces
what wire has higher friction (less slidy) - NiTi or stainless steel
NiTi
what are self ligating appliances
self ligating appliances have brakcets with a ‘gate’ to retain arch wire, elastomerics arent required
when may plastic sleeve/ bumper tubing be used
used to protect wire e.g in an extraction site from mastication
what device provides maximum anchorage in fixed appliances
temporary anchorage devices (TAD) - also known as mini implants
discuss temporary anchorage devices
titanium screws that are placed into bone on a temporary basis
made of titanium
interradicular or palatal
provide maximum anchorage for fixed appliances
inserted and removed by hand, dont need to be integrated into bone
compound anchorage
linking groups of teeth together to increase anchorage by increasing root surface area - results in less unwanted tooth movement
reciprocal anchorage
even
2 similar teeth with similar root surface area giving equal tooth movement e.g closing diastema between 2 central incisors
where do class III elastics run
lower canines to upper molars
where do class II elastics run
upper canines/laterals to lower molars
