named after Alexei Stakhanovite
he produced an enormous amount of coal during one attempt in 1935
he was set up to work in optimum conditions so his results would inspire other works
stakhanovite workers were given special privileges such as better living conditions, food and holidays
what was Magnitogorsk
in 1928, Magnitogorsk was just a small village, but by 1932, it became a thriving city of around 250000
a showpiece of soviet achievement
vital for supplying steel during WWII - the steel for more than half of the USSR’s tanks came from there
