Fitzgerald Flashcards
Primary hemostasis
Action of blood vessels and platelets in coagulation, interaction of injured vessels with platelets, resulting in forming a primary hemostatic plug, temporarily stops bleeding but is fragile
Secondary hemostasis
The action of the protein coagulation factors, coagulation factors interact with platelets and the injured vessel wall to ultimately generate fibrin, insoluble strands of fibrin deposit within the platelet plug to stabilize and reinforce it, blood has become a semi-solid gel at the site of injury
Fibrinolysis
After healing, additional plasma proteins break down and remove the clot, additional physiologic and biochemical inhibitors control all phases of the hemostatic system
The vascular system
Forms a distribution system for blood, carrying oxygen and nutrients to all cells and tissues and transporting waste for disposal
