Fitting Words (Figures of Speech) Flashcards
Parallelism
two or more elements of a sentence or series of sentences that have the same grammatical structure.
[These “parallel” elements can be used to intensify the rhythm of language, or to draw a comparison, emphasize, or elaborate on an idea.]
Example: Parallelism
[Num 24:17 ESV] 17
I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near:
a star shall come out of Jacob,
and a scepter shall rise out of Israel;
it shall crush the forehead of Moab
and break down all the sons of Sheth.
Antithesis
Contrasting ideas placed together often in parallel structure
Example: Antithesis
“Do not be overcome by evil,
———but overcome evil with good” (Rom. 12:21)
“Do not be conformed to this age,
——but be transformed by the renewal of the mind (Rom. 12:2)
Ellipsis
The artful omission of a word implied by the context. [if the ellipses in which the word immitted is a verb which governs the connected clauses then it is called a zeugma]
Example: Ellipsis
“Nature has formed you for this insanity, desire has trained you for this insanity, fortune has preserved you for this insanity”
“Nature has formed you, desire has trained you, fortune has preserved you for this insanity”
